NYC Mayor Pulls Recalled Toyotas from Fleet
On February 9, 2010, Toyota announced that 437,000 Toyota 2010 Prius hybrids and other hybrid vehicles will be recalled globally due to braking problems. The Prius recall comes after U.S. safety officials received more than one hundred complaints from 2010 Prius owners regarding the braking issue. In the United States, 133,000 2010 Toyota Prius hybrids will be recalled.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration has removed all of its 2010 Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles from the road after Toyota Motor Co. announced its latest recall, according to February 9, 2010, CBS News report
The city had ordered 181 of the hybrids to add to its fleet of 26,600 city vehicles. As of last week, 16 had been delivered and six were on the road. The vehicles were to be used across a variety of agencies, including environmental protection and health departments.
Spokesman Marc LaVorgna says the city is awaiting further word from Toyota and the city does not own any of the other Toyota models that were included in the recall.
Since November 2009, Toyota has recalled nearly 8.5 million vehicles, which includes the company’s eight most popular vehicles due to sticky gas pedals and floor mat interference, which can trigger sudden acceleration.
